Teen and Young Adult Therapy in Austin, TX
-
The teen years are a time of significant change and exploration in a person's life. Many teens are experiencing a tremendous amount of pressure in their day-to-day life. Some teens may experience constant "what ifs" or self-critical thoughts. Teens may be looking around at others who seemingly have things figured out and are thinking "how do I fit in?" Maybe they are withdrawn and don't have the energy to engage. Your teen may be lashing out at you or others. Some teens have experienced a traumatic event or extremely stressful situation that they are trying to navigate.
These same struggles often carry into the young adult years too — navigating identity, independence, relationships, and pressure while figuring out who they are outside of family and childhood structure.
Therapy for teens and young adults is a safe space to process their own needs, thoughts, and feelings. The process is guided by the client's goals and is a collaboration between them and the therapist. A therapist who the client believes is a "good fit" and understands them is of utmost importance for therapy to be successful. For teens, therapy with the parent together can also be an excellent way to build understanding and trust between parent and child, if both parent and teen are open to this process.
I draw on modalities including cognitive-behavioral therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention, attachment-based family therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, interpersonal therapy, accelerated resolution therapy, mindful self-compassion, and DBT-informed skills.
Areas I work with teens and young adults on include:
Anxiety and worry
OCD
Depression and mood concerns
Trauma and stressful life events
Identity and self-esteem
Relationship and social difficulties
Life transitions (e.g., high school to college, gaining independence)
I offer both in-person sessions at my Austin, TX office and virtual sessions for teens and young adults across Texas.
If you're wondering whether therapy might be a good fit for your teen or young adult, I'd love to talk it through with you.
